This summer, we wanted to escape the stifling heat, and the stories about seaweed, prices and conditions on the coast convinced us to put off our seaside trip. We decided to spend three days in Râșnov, both for the town itself and for Rosenau Rose Fest.

Since our last post here on the blog, there have been a few major changes: with time in short supply, but also wanting to capture our travels in greater detail, we’re trying to move towards video. This also means that, after all the work we put in over there (it’s not as easy as we thought), we’ll use this space to bring together just a few essential facts or additional details.

Our YouTube channel is still taking shape; we invite you to subscribe and help us grow a lovely community of thorough travellers.

We set off for Râșnov by train, taking our usual route through the Prahova Valley as far as Brașov. Brașov, my favourite city... Unfortunately, we didn’t stay long, but its turn will surely come...

From Brașov station, we took a regional train whose number we deliberately left out even on YouTube, because... the conductor let us film right from the cab, on condition of anonymity!

It seems the magic of a vlogging camera opens more doors, quite literally, and makes people more sociable (something I’m noticing more and more). Watch the video below for this lovely journey along the Brașov–Zărnești line, as far as Râșnov.

From here, after stocking up at Penny, we set off on foot towards the town centre. The town stretches out lengthways, so it’s easy to walk across its width: in 10–15 minutes, we were close to the foot of the mountain on which the fortress stands.

Our hotel, Radsor, is also there, and we had a fantastic view of the lift, the fortress and the Hollywood-style sign (lit up at night) that more and more Romanian towns and cities are adopting (we’ve seen others too, in Tulcea, for example; Brașov has one as well, as do many others).

Dimineața, la prânz și seara - o imagine de care nu ne putem sătura // Mornings, noon and nights - an image we can’t get enough of

What we didn’t like about the hotel, though, was something rather important: the bed… Anyway, two months have passed since then, and the memory of the tiredness has faded a little, while the memory of those evenings spent admiring the fortress from the balcony is still very vivid. So is the memory of the absolutely delicious food at the restaurant on the ground floor, so let’s forgive the hotel a few of its sins…

Ziua 1.

Day 1. The next morning—our first morning in Râșnov—also marked the first day of the festival. Before heading up to the fortress, where the festival was taking place in the courtyard that day, we planned to pop over to the Olympic ski jumps in Valea Cărbunării

On our way there, we passed the Saxon church (even the gate was locked), as well as the two Romanian churches, both dedicated to Saint Nicholas. We found the old one closed, while a wedding was taking place in the new one, so I couldn’t really say we visited them. Still, we saw them from the outside and briefly stepped inside the new one, without taking photos, out of respect for the occasion. You can see them below, though, in these video reports.

We continued to the ski jumps, where we filled our souls with the green of the mountainsides and marvelled at the courage it takes to jump from up there.

Back in the town centre, we took the “Asaltul Cetății” lift up to the viewing platform, where we admired the view over Râșnov before continuing towards the fortress.

The fortress, our second stop today, is a beauty—at least what we saw of it, as its “heart” is undergoing renovation.

The festival, though, was very underwhelming—don’t get me wrong, what was there was lovely, but there were literally three camps (plus the town hall’s stall). There weren’t many tourists around, and the locals didn’t seem to know much about the event either.

I invite you to watch this video, in which we explore the geography and history of the area, visit the ski jumps and then head up to the fortress for the festival.

After coming down from the fortress, we pushed ourselves to visit a third attraction, as we still felt somehow unsatisfied. So we headed north, in the opposite direction from the ski jumps, until we reached the Sissi Promenade. We didn’t find it remarkable, but there was nothing to dislike either—a path through a park.

It is significant, though, because its name recalls that Râșnov, like the rest of Transylvania, was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Few other traces remain.

Ziua 2.

Day 2. After a late start and lunch at Jenaki’s Bistro & Lounge, we set off for Dino Parc. The road follows Valea Cetății—from here, you can also take the footpath up to the fortress (if you don’t take the lift), or head further on towards Valea Cetății Cave.

We spent quite a while at Dino Parc, enjoying the dinosaurs like children (both the static and the animatronic ones), and used some vouchers from the hotel to try a few extra activities (including a short “9D” film, actually 3D, that simulated a roller coaster ride—we loved it!).

At the end, we also had a look around the Forest Museum, above the visitor centre: a small educational space, mainly for children, with rock and wood samples and a few interactive exhibits.

We’ll let the footage from our walk through the park do the talking—a visit that is itself a chance to learn and, for some children, a reason to return to Râșnov every year.

Towards evening, the festival that had been at the fortress the day before moved down to Piața Unirii; we caught some of it too (shown in the video above about Rosenau Rose Fest), on our way to Otto’s, the hotel restaurant, where we had dinner again.

We spent the evening upstairs, resting and watching films. We were due to check out the next day, so, between packing and the usual preparations, we were getting ready to say goodbye.

Ziua 3.

Day 3. Today, with our backpacks full, as we didn’t want to stop by the hotel on our way back, we took a Bolt to Valea Cetății Cave. It dropped us off at the main road, of course, leaving us with an uphill walk of about 500 metres that nearly finished us off.

How reassuring to know we’ll never die in the Himalayas (because we’d never take on a climb like that)…

When we finally reached the cave, we absolutely loved it. Not just the cave itself (new to us, as was the whole Râșnov area), but also the way it was presented (with the lights switched off so we could listen to the water dripping, the classical music performed here, and the AI guide complemented by the human guide, the only one who could keep an eye on us and answer questions) left us open-mouthed. This cave was a memorable experience that soothed our souls before we left.

In the cave, we made friends with another couple who were visiting the mountains with their child, and we travelled back to Râșnov with them. On our walk through the forest towards the car, we came across a little fox, young and probably hungry. We photographed it from a distance until it disappeared into the forest.

Back in Râșnov, we took the bus to Brașov. From there, we retraced our route home to a sweltering Bucharest.

We hope you enjoyed Râșnov, as well as our blog’s new approach: from now on, you’ll find most of the details and scenery in long-form videos, while here we’ll piece the stories together and share additional details, such as…
